Frequently Asked

Questions

**Catchment and Capacity**

I recognize that this is a huge issue for our District! After attending the last board meeting, we do not have all the information that we need to make this decision. Upon obtaining this September's final enrolment we are one step closer.

I am committed to having ALL the information we need at the table so we are making the best decision for this year, but also for years to come. There WILL be some tough decisions made; however, I believe knowing that they are bettering the district for the long term is the key.

**Children with Special Needs**

I am COMMITTED to helping EVERY child be successful, despite their needs. I grew up with an individual very close to me with special needs. I saw and experienced first-hand the toll the system took on that individual, their family and most of all their mother as she worked to be a champion for her child's education.

I want to spend surplus dollars on more help for these students and more training for their support. With our labour shortage, EAs do not necessarily have the skill set or training they need for the challenges they face. What a great way to make meaningful positive changes for our students and our staff.

I am also committed to advocate to the Ministry for a long over-due increase in LINK funding for vulnerable students.

**Mental Health**

I am very public about my own battle with mental health. With mental illness on the rise for students and teacher burn out only making our labour shortage worse, I am committed to spending surplus dollars on mental health supports.

**Bullying**

I am for 100% inclusion. This drives my passion and work within the Y. I believe zero tolerance, means zero tolerance when the health and safety of other children or staff are at risk. I also believe that families need to partner with the District to make this truly possible.

**Teacher Recruitment**

I am pleased to see the district implement dollars into a Recruitment Officer. I plan to continue to see this through, in addition to support partnerships with universities to promote practicum placements.

Additionally, I want to see similar work done to recruit and train EAs so that every child is receiving the support that they need - and that our educators are too!

I would also like to see the District work with Move Up PG so we showcase what an amazing place this is to live, work and play!

**SOGI**

I am 100% in favour of SOGI and inclusive schools. I want to see the SOGI 123 strategies implemented, particularly around inclusive learning and training.

**Lunch Hours**

Last year DPAC surveyed schools and made recommendations to each principal. Some schools have made changes based on this feedback and some have not. First, I encourage families to follow up with their principal if this is a concern.

Additionally, if this is not addressed in this method then I am committed to finding a solution that meets both the constraints of the district AND the needs of the students. From my years in camping, I know the range of times that children need to eat and the importance to meet all their needs so that they can continue to participate, learn and grow.
